Have a Great Conference... then relax!

By Arlene Martell

Each time we go to a conference, I see many people rushing out the door to catch the first flight home.

I simply can't imagine that. Conferences are generally exhausting. You spend hours on your feet, hours in training sessions, hours networking and late nights with little sleep before doing it all again the next day. You are usually out of your normal rhythm for at least 3 days and in a hotel far from home. There is little time to relax. To rush out the door, do the whole airport drama and get home late completely exhausted is not my idea of fun.

Don't get me wrong, conferences are great and well worth the time and energy, but to get the most out of a conference, stay for a day or two after the conference to relax and rejuvenate before heading home. Wind down, clear your head, go site seeing, sleep late and take a break before heading home to conquer your emails and busy life again.

You have heard James and I talking about break-ations, and adding a 3-5 day holiday before or after your conference. You can see all the attractions in the city you are visiting and enjoy your trip so much more. But, even if you do your break-ation before your conference, don't rush home - take at least one extra day to relax. We do this all the time.

I often will book the last night or two at a completely different hotel than the conference was held at depending on what city we are in. I always book the extra night through Hotwire.com or Priceline.com so we always get a good deal. Sometime switching hotels for a day or two really changes your whole mindset and refreshes your body and mind.

Some of the fondest memories of our trips are of the last day that we spent time together exploring before heading home. Our trip to San Diego was a perfect example. After the last ShareASale conference, we stayed an extra day and cruised down the coast from La Jolla beach to Coronado Island where we explored the beaches and a wonderful hotel called the Hotel Del Coronado, a Victorian palace built in 1888. We stopped along the way and really enjoyed the beautiful scenery and new surroundings. The day was long and lazy. By the time we reached the airport we were relaxed and ready to go home.

The same holds true for the ShareASale conference coming up, we will take our break-ation for 3 days in Disneyland before heading to the Pelican Hill Resort, then we booked into the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach to relax on Sunday afternoon and all day Monday. I am looking forward to exploring the charming ocean side community of Balboa Island and other treasures and simple pleasures we might find.

So take your pick, go explore the city, shops and beaches or relax by the pool, but either way you will come home more energized and ready to get back to work! :)

All the best,
